Running Club is non-mandatory school activity coordinated and supervised by a group of volunteer parents.

The ethos of the club is to improve the running abilities of the children at St Columba’s who wish to participate. This is done in a supportive and fun environment with a weekly supervised run around the local school area.

All students are welcome to participate. Prep children must be accompanied by a parent every week. Parent involvement is encouraged.


Commencing from the school playground, the usual course taken is along Normanby Rd to Beach Rd, cross at the traffic lights to Elwood beach, then along the foreshore footpath up to Point Ormond and back to school (same route). This takes approximately 40 mins and the children usually return to school around 8.45am.


Children can run either 1.1km, 1.6km or 2.1km. Generally they will have an idea of what they can comfortably manage and the opportunity is always there for them to extend themselves if they want. The children are encouraged to challenge themselves over the term and hopefully extend the distances they run.


Meet at 8am every Wednesday (unless otherwise notified) during Terms 1, 2 & 4. (Not in Term 3 due to the variability of the weather).

We leave the playground at 8.05am sharp and no latecomers can be accommodated unless a parent helper is still at the school. The exact commencement date for each term will be published in the school newsletter/website each term.

What to wear

School sports uniform and a pair of suitable running/sports shoes.

Pre/Post Run

On arrival each child is to check in with his/her year level running coordinator and have his/her name marked off the class list. The children will be given a stamp to designate participation in the run.  Post the run the children go through some stretching exercises and have a post run drink & snack. Snacks consist of fruit and homemade muffins/banana bread so if your child has any allergies or food intolerance you will need to ensure the team are aware.


$5 per child per term. This contributes to the post run snack provided by Marcia Crocker (school parent).


If a session is cancelled (eg. bad weather or not enough parent helpers) this will be communicated via the Tiqbiz app by 7.15am on the Wednesday – so it is important that you download the app and check this each Wed morning.


Previous running experience is not necessary, however it is important that your child has a commitment to participate, be in good health to run and keen to work on his/her fitness. As this is not a mandatory school activity, children who are unwell, injured or disinterested in running should not attend. We work with a parent child ratio of 1:10 and therefore this does not allow for significant individual attention.

Preps, Grade 1s and newcomers are advised to run at their own pace (but not walk) to the first distance until he/she can manage a further distance comfortably.

Special note

If your child suffers from a specific condition (eg. Asthma) it is your parental responsibility to ensure he/she can manage the condition, or you will need to run with your child and ensure you have the appropriate medication (Ventolin) available. Parent volunteers are generally not medically trained however we can attend to any minor injuries (cuts, scrapes etc).

How Can You Help?

We rely on parent helpers each week to ensure that we meet the parent:child ratio so the children are appropriately supervised and safety is maintained. Even if you cannot commit to helping every Wednesday, please come along when you can. You do not need to have any running ability. There are plenty of other jobs you can assist with such as manning the traffic lights and the bike path crossing. We depend on some occasional helpers as well as the regulars.
