Building Mathematical Thinkers

At St Columba's, we believe Mathematics is about much more than finding the right answer.

Through our IB Primary Years Programme, students develop confidence, curiosity and problem-solving skills as they explore mathematical concepts, make connections and apply their learning in meaningful ways.

We encourage students to;

  • Think deeply about mathematical concepts and ideas.
  • Ask questions and explore different ways of solving problems.
  • Explain their reasoning and justify their thinking.
  • Approach challenges with confidence and perseverance.

"Mathematics is not about speed or memorisation. It is about reasoning, making connections,

exploring patterns and developing flexible thinking."

- Jo Boaler

Making Mathematics Visible

Teacher and student discussing mathematical thinking and problem-solving strategies during a classroom learning experience.

Students develop understanding by sharing and discussing their thinking.

  • Explain strategies and mathematical reasoning
  • Compare different approaches to solving problems
  • Build confidence through discussion and collaboration

Learning Through Exploration

Students using hands-on materials and visual models to explore mathematical concepts and develop number sense.

Students learn Mathematics best when they can see it, touch it and experience it.

  • Use hands-on materials and visual models
  • Develop strong number sense and flexible thinking
  • Explore concepts through games, investigations and inquiry

Mathematics in Action

Students applying mathematical thinking and problem-solving skills through collaborative classroom learning activities.

Students apply their learning to meaningful and authentic situations.

  • Solve real-world problems and challenges
  • Analyse information and make informed decisions
  • Connect Mathematics to everyday life and learning

Challenge for Every Learner

Every student is supported and challenged at their point of need.

Rich classroom tasks and open-ended investigations provide opportunities for all learners to extend their thinking and develop confidence in Mathematics.

For students with a particular aptitude or passion for Mathematics, extension opportunities are available through the APSMO program, including:

  • Maths Quest
  • Maths Explorer and
  • Maths Olympiad.

Qualifying students may also be invited to participate in the International Maths Challenge. In recent years, St Columba's students have achieved outstanding results, with many students placing within the top 85th percentile globally and several achieving results within the top 95th percentile.
