Starting Big School: How to Prepare Your Kinder Child for a Smooth Transition

The leap from kindergarten to primary school is one of the biggest milestones in a child’s early life—and for parents, it can feel just as momentous. While the thought of lunchboxes, uniforms and drop-offs might feel like a whirlwind, there are simple, thoughtful ways you can prepare your kinder child for a smooth, confident start to Prep/Foundation.

Here’s how to help make the transition to “big school” a positive experience for your whole family:

1. Build Consistent Routines Early

Children thrive on predictability. A few weeks before school begins, gradually establish regular sleep, wake-up, and meal times that align with the school schedule. Practise morning routines together—getting dressed, brushing teeth, packing a bag—and talk through what a typical school morning might look like.

? Tip: Pack lunchboxes ahead of time and practise eating from them at home. This helps kids get used to unwrapping food, managing containers, and eating within a break time.

2. Talk About What to Expect

Start gentle conversations about school life—what classrooms look like, what a teacher does, how playtime works, and how to ask for help. Read picture books about starting school or role-play typical scenarios like saying goodbye at the gate or asking a teacher for help.

? Keep language positive and reassuring: “You might feel a bit nervous at first—that’s totally okay! Your teacher will be there to help.”

3. Develop Social-Emotional Readiness

School isn’t just about learning ABCs and 123s—it’s also about friendships, resilience and independence. Encourage your child to practise:

  • Taking turns and sharing

  • Saying “please” and “thank you”

  • Managing small emotions (frustration, nervousness)

  • Putting on shoes and opening their lunchbox

  • Asking adults for help when needed

? These skills support confidence and reduce overwhelm in those early weeks.

4. Attend Orientation Programs

Most schools offer some form of Prep transition or orientation program—like “Come & Play” sessions or school tours. These programs allow children to explore their future classroom, meet teachers, interact with other new students, and get a sense of what school life feels like.

? Make sure to attend as many of these sessions as you can. They help create familiarity and reduce first-day nerves—for kids and parents alike!

5. Get to Know the School Community

Check if your chosen school offers parent information sessions, buddy programs, or welcome packs. These connections not only support your child’s transition but also help you feel a sense of belonging as a parent.

? Ask questions, introduce yourself to other families, and make use of any resources offered by the school—it’s a team effort.

6. Stay Calm, Supportive and Positive

Children pick up on our emotions, so try to stay calm and upbeat about the start of school—even if you’re feeling emotional. Focus on the exciting parts: new friends, fun activities, and growing up. After the first few weeks, celebrate small wins like packing their bag independently or finding their classroom.

? Remember: transitioning to school is a journey, not a race. Every child finds their rhythm at their own pace.

Starting school is the beginning of something wonderful. With preparation, positivity and partnership between home and school, your child’s transition into Prep can be filled with confidence, curiosity and joy.
