Wild Melbourne and making polluted water clean

Students from years 3-6 participated in the Wild Melbourne incursion on Wednesday. The story about the journey of the Yarra River was told and the pollution humans cause to the river and other waterways.

They participated in a challenge to learn about the tragedy of the commons. This was all about fishing and why being sustainable is important for resources. This has tied in with our classroom learning across the school during Inquiry and Earth Sciences. The message was about sustainability ...
St Columba's community participates in Love Our Street 3184

Last Saturday 5th August, members of the St Columba's community participated in Love Our Street 3184. Thank you to the Taylor and Ilott families who helped to clean up a lot of rubbish around the St Columba's precinct!There were a total of 17 volunteers from the school and wider community, including 5 champion children, who together collected 23.78 kg of litter, which is equivalent to about 20 shopping bags!

 

Eco Warriors explore the environment

Last week the 3/4s went to explore the different habitats and creatures found in and around the canal and beach.

First we explored the birds in the Elwood canal; some birds were swimming in the water and we found out that one part of the canal is made up of seawater and fresh water.

Welcome back to school! The Eco Warriors hope you had a great green Easter!

We have been very busy this year continuing our water saving work.

In term 4 of 2016, all the 3/4s took part in a water audit. The aim was to count and record how many water sources we have in our school. From our audit, we found that we have 12 water bubblers and 18 toilets. Some groups found different amounts so we used an estimate and calculated the average. We learnt that our water flow is between 6-9 liter...
Eco Warriors awarded for eco excellence!

Today Sharron from the Port Phillip EcoCentre presented the 3/4 students with their certificates for being excellent Eco Warriors for St Columba's.

Sharron has been instrumental in helping our school be a ResourceSmart school and we'd like to thank both the Eco Centre and our Green Team parents for all of their help and dedication to our program.
